Congress Passes Bill to Make Public Epstein Documents

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to legislation that will force the release of official records concerning the late pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The administration relented after an extended period of trying to delay the cross-party initiative involving a case that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, expediting the process. Just before, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer said in a floor speech on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

This legislation next goes to the president for his approval. Trump signaled on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Though the president has for an extended period downplayed the controversy over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and announced he would give his assent if it reaches his desk.

Response

Opposition lawmakers, along with those affected and their representatives who were seated in a public section, applauded after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he worried the measure would disclose specific data of people, potential suspects and others implicated in the investigation.
